Most children have excellent sight and do not need to wear glasses however eye problems can develop at any age but it can be difficult to know if your child has an eye problem as children rarely complain. Its a fact Children’s Eyesight is often neglected.
Your child does not have to be able to read to have their eyes examined; it is possible to see if there are any problems and if spectacles are needed without asking any questions.
Waiting until after your child has started school might hamper their learning and development. It is also harder to correct any vision problems which may have developed so remember to take children for developmental checks and if there are any concerns your child can have a NHS funded sight test if they are under 16 years of age or for those aged 16-18 and in full time education.
Eye examinations do not hurt, if it is necessary to do further tests it will be discussed in advance. Once your child has had their vision checked it is important to continue with regular sight tests, if there are no concerns or underlying problems this should be at least every year if under 16 and two years if older.
Children and especially those between the ages of 8-18 often spend a significant amount of time looking at digital displays, smart phones, laptops, eReaders etc. Eyes can become stressed and strained. Children accomplish as much as 80% of learning through sight during their first 12 years .There are many things that can help from making sure room lighting is good, the monitor is lit well and that they sit properly. However regular eye examinations will help find any underlying correction that maybe needed.
